I’m noticing some slight peeling, is this normal?

The answer is yes, and it’s a good sign… the great news though is that it’s not forever.

This process is called Retinization and it’s a fancy way to call the inevitable adjustment period. The peeling with start to fade in a week or so and completely subside after 6 weeks.

This is quite normal and here’s why. Our Collagen Serum contains Retinyl Palmitate (an organic chemical and much gentler version of Retinol / Vitamin A) and noticing the slight peeling means it is actually working.

The reason for this is that Retinyl Palmitate has a semi exfoliator quality to it giving your skin the boost it needs to regenerate and replace the excess dead skin cells which it is now shedding.

All you have to do is continue using the moisturisers and simply include a very gentle/mild scrub in your weekly skincare routine.

The trick is to adjust your skincare routine accordingly. Go basic, moisturise and go slow. This is a marathon, not a race.

There’s one exception. If your skin is so sensitive that even after trying all the tips, and notice that the peeling is not subsiding…regrettably your skin type is not suited for Retinyl Palmitate.

Retinoids - What's the hype?

Basically, if there’s a “retin” in there, it’s a form of vitamin A. What’s the catch you ask?… Almost all of them must be converted into retinoid acid to work. The conversion looks like this.

Retinyl palmitate > Retinol > Retinaldehyde > Retinoic acid (Usually, the further away a form of Vitamin A is from retinoic acid, the less effective BUT gentler it is)

Retinoids help your skin in many ways:

  • Accelerate cellular turnover (your skin’s natural exfoliating process)
  • Boost the production of collagen, which firms skin
  • Bust acne
  • Fight the free radicals that cause wrinkles
  • Reduce the appearance of dark spots
  • Shrink the size of pores
  • Wonderful, right? But there is a price to pay… Retinization.

Retinization is a fancy way to call the inevitable adjustment period. Six possible weeks of pink, flaky skin. *sigh*
It’s enough to make you want to throw in the towel and forget this retinoid business altogether.
That’ll be a mistake however as this flaky mess is actually a sign the retinoid is working.
Here’s the deal: retinoids speed up cellular turnover, i.e., the skin’s natural exfoliating process.
This is NOT the same as “proper” exfoliation done with acids or scrubs (these remove dead cells either manually or by dissolving the “glue” that holds them together). But the result is similar. Retinoids make your skin cells turn over at a faster rate so now you have more dead cells on the surface of your skin – Hence the flaking/peeling.

But do you really have to put up with it? Here’s how to counteract the peeling effects of retinoids:

Retinoids - Easy rule: Don't stop

This is where most users go wrong. They see their faces turn into a flaky mess and stop using retinoids until it’s completely back to normal. The next time they use it, the peeling starts again. Before you know it, retinoids become something they use only once in a while. Or worse, quit completely.

When you do this, your skin is reverting back into beginner mode. You didn’t give it enough time to get used to retinoids so now it acts like you’re using them for the first time…Every time. Once you introduce a retinoid into your skincare routine, stick with it. It’s ok to cut back frequency but don’t stop using it completely.

Like we’ve mentioned – There’s one exception. If your skin is so sensitive that even after trying all the tips, and the peeling stubbornly persist after 6 weeks, give up. Retinoids just don’t agree with your skin.

Because of sensitive skin, we only use the gentler form of retinoids, like retinyl palmitate. They’re not as effective as retinol but they’re so gentle, they’re unlikely to irritate your skin. (However, if your skin can’t take this, retinoids regrettably then is not compatible with your skin type.).

Retinoids are not like other skincare ingredients. You can’t use them every day and expect them to give you gorgeous skin immediately. You have to work your way up there.
Perhaps try using your night moisturiser on alternating days and as your skin gets used to the retinoids (you’ll know when this happen – your skin will look smooth and radiant instead than red and flaky) and then build up frequency gradually.

The bottom line is that you can jump on the retinoid train or up your dose without putting up with flaky skin. The trick is to adjust your skincare routine accordingly. Go basic, moisturise and go slow. This is a marathon, not a race.

6 Weeks later and that flakiness/peeling phase has passed…

You’ve navigated the stormy weather and popped out the other side, Congratulations! From here on out your skin should be much happier, stronger with very little if any breakouts. Excess oil production should start to reduce creating a good balance for what your skin needs and your skin should look smooth and radiant!

However, not every persons skin reacts the same… so if your skin condition worsens after a few weeks of continuous use, immediately discontinue.
